Review: SIX

SIX is a musical about the six wives of Henry VIII, performed by the multi talented The CTC company at Stowmarket’s Regal.

An outstanding production it amazingly tells an accurate history of the six Queens in a modern day setting of a girl group.

We are introduced to the six queens through autobiographical songs, and then the various queens carry out a singing contest to become the leader of the group and thus the best queen.

It’s filled with humour as well as some songs, that quickly become very memorable. I must admit I knew very little of the musical before seeing this teenage version, but all the songs had a familiarity about them. This maybe because the writers, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss gave each queen a persona loosely based on real singers such as Beyoncé and Adele to name but two.

The staging and clothing make you feel like you are at a pop concert. As you would expect from anything that the brilliant CTC put their hand to, it’s highly polished and a joy to watch, by the end of the performance everyone was up on their feet and probably going away not only truly entertained but also a little more knowledgeable about the six wives of Henry VIII. This show only ran for two days, it honestly could’ve done with a much longer run.

Quite simply CTC rule musical theatre.
